The Arab League Park Project is a rehabilitation initiative for the historic park1 built in 19132 and located in Casablanca’s Sidi Belyout district.3 Known as one of Casablanca’s green lungs,4 the project addresses the park’s deteriorated conditions5 by rehabilitating fundamental landscape elements6 and developing additional green spaces, playgrounds, and public services.7 It aims to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors8 by creating a recreational green space for leisure and outdoor activities9 while preserving the park’s character and natural heritage.10 The project is part of the Green Spaces layer of the Greater Casablanca Development Plani (2015-2020).11

The project extends over a total area of 3 square kilometers.12 It encompasses a range of recreational, environmental, social, economic and sports activities. It is implemented through two main approaches:

(1) Rehabilitating existing infrastructure, which includes the following features:

  • Restoring of all areas of the park.13
  • Reunifying the park’s two parts by transforming a section of Moulay Youssef Boulevard into a pedestrian street14 and demolishing some buildings on the boulevard, except those listed as national heritage.15
  • Rehabilitating the park’s green spaces, covering a total area of 55,000 square meters.16

(2) Developing new areas and facilities, which include the following features:

  • Creating sports trails.17
  • Establishing a playground covering an area of 10,700 square meters.18
  • Creating five coffee shops and three kiosks with public restrooms.19
  • Establishing underground parking with a capacity of 750 cars.20

The park’s public and recreational areas attract visitors, primarily from surrounding neighborhoods, residents, and families seeking relaxation and play areas for their children.21 Due to the presence of the sports trails and courts, the project also attracts athletes.22 To ensure visitor safety, security guards are posted across multiple locations and the park is equipped with high-tech surveillance cameras.23

The project is initiated by the Municipality of Casablanca and Casablanca Aménagement,24 a public limited-liability company established in October 2008 following the preparation of the “Master Plan for Urban Development (SDAU)” for the Greater Casablanca Region.25 The project’s total cost exceeds $10 million,26 with funding from multiple entities. The Municipality of Casablanca contributed $4.5 million, the Ministry of Interior $3.5 million, and the Casablanca-Settat Region allocated $2 million.27 The project was inaugurated in 2021.28
